[edit] B5 Generation (1994 to 2001)
Image:B5A4prefacelift.jpg Image:1.8tQ face lift.jpg Image:Dashrings2.jpg The B5 generation Audi A4, carrying a chassis code of 8D, is centered around two engines in the US: the 1.8 liter turbocharged inline 4 and the 2.8 liter naturally aspirated V6 configuration both 12v and 30v. Audi's legendary quattro All Wheel Drive System was offered as an option, however the Frontrak front wheel drive came standard. The A4 shared the B5 platform with the Volkswagen Passat.
In Europe the B5 A4 had more engine options both Diesels and Petrol: Diesel: 1.9TDI1.9 90bhp (110bhp/115bhp/130bhp), 2.5TDI (150); Petrol: 1.6, 1.8(125bhp), 1.8T(150bhp/face lift USA 170bhp and Europe 180BHP), 2.4 V6, 2.6 V6 and 2.8 V6.
An upgrade in 1998 changed the 2.8 liter engine to a 5 valve per cylinder design, and a cosmetic facelift in the middle of 1999 changed all models to one piece headlights, mildly different taillights, different door handles as well as other minor interior and exterior changes. A complete list of changes could be found at the B5 Facelift Information page.
On the other hand the Euro face lift A4's had more changes both inside and out depending on the spec, for instant the 1.8Tq power increased from 150bhp to 180bhp in Europe and 170bhp in the US. The 1.8Tq also got white dials which the FWD cars never got. The other changes for the Euro face lift was the bumpers which you can see from the picture where some what different than the US spec or pre-face lift.
The B5 Platform of the A4 which also incorporated the S4 and the RS4 came in the form of Saloon/Sedan and Avant with only the RS4 available in the Avant only. The RS4 was never officially sold in the US.
[edit] B6 Generation (2000 to 2005)
Image:B6A4.jpg The B6 generation Audi A4, carrying a chassis code of 8E, was also available with 2 engines in the US: the 1.8 liter turbocharged inline 4 (with a returnless fuel system setting it apart from previous 1.8Ts), and a 3.0L 30V. Major differences included painted lowers, the USP package, and 6-speed on the 1.8Ts being offered after 2004.5. There were also other small differences.
In Europe the Diesel 1.9TDI , 2.5TDI,3.0TDI engines and 1.6, 2.0, 2.0FSI, 2.4 Petrol engines were available as well.
[edit] B7 Generation (2005.5 to 2008)
Image:B7A4.jpg The B7 generation Audi A4, extending the lifespan of the 8E chassis code, is available with 2 engines in the US: the 2.0 liter turbocharged inline 4, and a 3.2L 30V. One of the most noteworthy features of this A4 generation is that it no longer shares its platform with the Volkswagen Passat. This generation also marks the move from Audi's renowned five valve per cylinder design to it's four valve per cylinder FSI engine.
[edit] B8 Generation (2008.5 to Present)
The B8 generation is the most recent iteration and reflects the second generation of the A4 to have a platform completely separat from the Volkswagen Passat.
